On Wednesday 2nd November a group of Downing students and Fellows gathered in the Wilkins Room over wine and cheese for the first in a new series of informal literary evenings.

In candlelight and shadow, the ‘Haunted Verse’ evening hosted readings of poetry, prose and dramatic verse from ancient (Sophocles) to modern (Kenneth Slessor). Dr Tomalin treated the group to a haunting reading from the 9th century Grettir's Saga, in English and Old Icelandic.

There were wonderful student readings from Oedipus Rex and of poems by John Donne and the ‘Graveyard Poet’ Thomas Parnell. We look forward to many more such evenings to come.
