New edition of the Master's book published

A fourth edition of the Master Professor Graham Virgo's book The Principles of the Law of Restitution has been published by Oxford University Press.

The new edition brings the volume fully up to date and was rewritten to reflect significant changes in the Law of Restitution and the expansion in the theoretical and critical commentary on the subject.

It includes new chapters on the claimant's expense, absence of intent, and the defence of illegality. While existing chapters on the treatment of the history of unjust enrichment, the meaning of enrichment, the treatment of legally effective bases for receipt, and compulsion, have been significantly expanded.

Controversial debates are addressed, including those surrounding the ambit, function, and interpretation of the law of restitution.

Though focusing primarily on English law, this latest edition also engages with the law in other common law jurisdictions, such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Singapore. It provides a clear exposition of complex areas of law, as well as critical analysis of the Law of Restitution.

The Master said: "The third edition of my book was published in 2015 and there have been many significant changes in the law since then which have meant that many parts of the new edition have had to be rewritten. I am grateful to the many Downing students I have taught over the years who have helped me to clarify my thinking in this complex but fascinating area of the law."
