Music at Downing

There is a strong tradition of Music at Downing, with activities ranging from student-organised jazz nights and classical recitals, to workshops, professional concerts, and alumni events organised by the Director of Music.

The College has several venues which are used for concerts and recitals of various kinds, a dedicated Music Centre for practice and rehearsals, and a range of instruments, including several grand pianos (including a Steinway). Find out more about our facilities.

Downing College Music Society

DCMS is run by a committee of students, overseen by the Director of Music. They generally organise a musical event of some sort every week during full term: this might be an intimate recital in the beautiful setting of the Master’s Lodge, an open mic night in the bar, or an evening of Songs from the Shows in the Theatre.

You can follow the society for news and updates on Facebook and Instagram, or email the President (Ria Sood) for more information.

Downing College Jazz Band

The Jazz Band rehearses regularly and plays for a variety of events, including the biennial Downing May Ball, open jam sessions in the JCR, and May Week garden parties. For more information please email the President, Helen Ng.

Music in Chapel

The Chapel Choir rehearses on Wednesdays and again on Sundays, followed by Choral Evensong. For more information about the Choir, Organ, and Choral and Organ Awards, please see our Chapel Choir page.

Come-and-Sing Events

Held two or three times a year, these events provide the whole Downing community and general public with a chance to come together for a day to work on a favourite piece of music, often accompanied by instrumentalists.

The Take-a-Break Choir

An informal weekly session run by the Director of Music in Easter term, covering songs from the shows, pop songs, power ballads, disco hits etc. Open to anyone who wants to let off some steam!

Chamber Music Scheme

For anyone who would like to explore the joys of chamber music, at whatever level, with professional coaching sessions organised by the Director of Music.

Central Colleges Orchestra

In collaboration with a number of Colleges, the orchestra is open to all and performs termly.

Volunteering outside College

Weekly recital slots at a local care home provide Downing musicians with a chance to contribute to the wider community, and gain valuable skills in performing for a different kind of audience.
