The Mathias Society at Downing

The Mathias Society is the society of all Economists and Land Economists at Cambridge, who automatically become members on joining the College. The committee (elected annually by the members of the Society) in collaboration with the Director of Studies, organises a variety of events throughout the year. These range from more academic events, such as guest speaker evenings, to more social events.

An important date in the society’s calendar is the Mathias Annual Dinner when many alumni return to the college for the black-tie formal event at which prizes are awarded for the previous academic year and speeches are made - including an extended speech by the Guest of Honour.

In addition, there are numerous other events organised throughout the year, including a May Week Garden Party post exams. We also work hard to keep in contact with alumni and have designated Welfare Officers to help ensure the wellbeing of our members.
