Downing appoints new Senior Bursar
Downing College is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Simon Brockington as the new Senior Bursar. Dr Brockington will join the College in November, taking over the role from Gavin Flynn who has been in post since 2020.
The Senior Bursar provides a key leadership role at Downing, overseeing the operations of the College, managing the College’s investments and developing financial policy, as well as contributing to decision-making at senior level.
Dr Brockington has most recently been Bursar at Homerton College in the University of Cambridge. He originally trained as a marine biologist with the British Antarctic Survey and spent four years over-wintering on Antarctic research stations. The experience gave rise to an interest in marine conservation and he became Executive Secretary to the International Whaling Commission in 2010 and then a Senior Civil Servant with the UK’s Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in 2017.
On taking on the role of Downing’s Senior Bursar, Dr Brockington said “I am delighted to be joining Downing as it implements its new strategy to help students achieve their full potential and make the very best of their College experience. I am equally delighted to be following in Gavin Flynn's footsteps and I hope I can bring the same energy, commitment and sense of inclusivity that he has done. Education is one of life's greatest pleasures. I look forward to supporting Downing as it helps others to thrive at the University of Cambridge.”
Current Senior Bursar Gavin Flynn said, “This is an excellent appointment for Downing. I have known Simon as part of the Bursar community in Cambridge and can say with confidence he will be a great addition to the Fellowship and the team, bringing relevant experience and a warm and thoughtful approach to life.”
Master of Downing College, Professor Graham Virgo said, “I am grateful for everything Gavin has done for Downing as Senior Bursar and look forward to working with Simon on a number of important initiatives to ensure that Downing enhances its reputation as providing an exceptional education for our students.”
