Downing celebrates Commemoration Day
On Sunday 18 May, Downing College celebrated its Commemoration Day, marking the anniversary of the laying of the College’s foundation stone in 1807.
The occasion also allowed the College to thank all benefactors, past and present, who have helped support Downing over the years.
A Commemoration of Benefactors Service took place in the College Chapel, where the Master read out the names of Downing’s principal benefactors and gave thanks to the alumni and friends who have supported the College over the past year — a year which has seen a record number of donations and pledges.
Following the service, a reception and formal dinner were held, attended by the Master, Fellows, scholars and guests, including the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Heads of Schools and Heads of other Cambridge Colleges.
The day also saw Nigel Clifford (Geography, 1978), Downing alumnus and Rector of Lincoln College (Downing’s sister College at the University of Oxford), awarded an Honorary Fellowship in a ceremony at the Master’s Lodge.
Professor Graham Virgo KC (Hon), Master of Downing College, said: “We gratefully acknowledge all major bequests and thank those alumni and friends who have committed a gift in their will to the College. For the continuing support of old members of the College, we give thanks. We acknowledge all those whose loyal service has helped the College since its foundation.
“The College, as an institution of teaching, learning and research, has been sustained in its quest to uphold the Founder’s motto Quarere verum, seek the truth.”
