Downing's Summer of Sport: Jonty Yin
Gam-jeom, kyorugi and poomsae will be words that we all become familiar with over the next few days as Taekwondo takes its place on the Olympic stage.
Recent Downing Graduate, Jonty Yin (2020) is an accomplished Taekwondoin and has represented the England team in several championships. With his sights set on a world title, we spoke to Jonty to find out more about his Taekwondo journey so far.
How did you become interested in Taekwondo?
I tried several martial arts classes when I was around 7. The Taekwondo class I tried was taught by a then 8th degree black belt who has since been awarded a 9th degree - the highest rank in Taekwondo. I have trained with him ever since.
When did you realise you had a talent for the sport and how did you get involved in national and international competitions?
I grew up with dyspraxia, so I never had much confidence in my sporting ability. However, my instructor told me from an early age that he saw I had the potential to represent the national team one day. I would say the first time I realised my ability was when I was selected to represent England for the E-World Championships and European Championships in 2021.
Who are your sporting role models?
I have immense respect for my instructor, Grand Master Nardizzi, as his scientific and analytical approach to training helps me understand how to optimise my performance. In competition, I particularly admire Master Suska from Poland and Ms Silvia Farigu from Italy. They are both multiple-time European and World Champions - the precision and power they display is truly inspiring.
What did you study at Downing and why did you choose that subject?
I studied Law - I have always enjoyed close analysis and debate, so I am hoping to qualify as a barrister in the coming years.
How did you balance your studies at Downing with training and competing?
Balancing the two was difficult. During my second year, I represented the national team and was Captain of Taekwondo at Cambridge whilst studying for my degree, so I found many of my weekends filled with competitions or training. However, I found that by setting a strict timetable, it was possible to be very efficient.
I found the exercise, enjoyment and community offered by Taekwondo helped me to stay balanced.
What have you been up to since finishing at Downing?
I recently graded for my second-degree black belt under Grand Master Nardizzi and have competed in a number of competitions, most recently winning Gold at the Impact Open and placing 4th in Holland.
I am preparing to study for a Masters of Law specialising in International Commercial Law next year at UCL.
What sporting goals would you like to achieve?
I am looking towards hopefully competing at the the 2026 World Cup in Taekwondo. I aspire to win a European or World title in the coming years.
