Pedal power: Downing’s Cycling Club hits the road
Today is World Bicycle Day and as we are in the city with the highest level of cycling in the country, we thought it would be a good time to chat all things bikes!
Olly Tonge is the Captain of the Downing Cycling Club. This year, to open out cycling to more members of the Downing community, the Club have restored the College road bike, giving it a new set of tyres, a new chain, brakes and gears.
We spoke with Olly to delve into what makes cycling such a rewarding pursuit and how the College has played a vital role in enabling more students to experience its benefits.
How did you get involved with the Downing Cycling Club and what is your role?
I have been cycling now for four years. I joined the Cycling Club in my first year to get involved with sport at Downing.
As Club Captain, I organise group rides, spread awareness of intercollegiate races and make sure that members feel supported.
The Club currently has around 20 members and we go out cycling 2-3 times a week.
What is the best thing about cycling?
It is such a good way to get out and explore the area and is a great way to take a break from revision and de-stress.
You can’t beat a long ride in the sunshine with your friends!
What difference has support from the College made to the Club?
A big difference! Thanks to College funding, we were able to buy our College bike, which has been important for getting newcomers into the sport. We have also been able to provide helmets, shoes, lights and bike tools so that anyone can have a go without needing their own gear.
Our Club members have also been supported when they have needed to buy other bike essentials such as inner tubes, bike lubricant and cleaning supplies – items that are often not factored into student budgets!
What is your favourite Cambridge cycling route?
Either out towards Gamlingay or down to Therfield!
