- Why study on the Foundation Year at Cambridge?
-
The Cambridge Foundation Year is designed to offer an alternative route to Cambridge for students who have experienced educational disadvantage and disruption in their educational journey so far.
The programme offers a challenging academic curriculum. It broadens and deepens students’ knowledge and understanding of Arts, Humanities and Social Science subjects. They experience Cambridge's teaching methods and educational community. Completing the programme equips them to continue to many degree courses in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Foundation Year staff are dedicated to providing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching in an inclusive way. Within the team, they have a range of disciplinary and research backgrounds, but they work together to provide a cohesive course that prepares students for a range of pathways.
- Why study on the Foundation Year at Cambridge?

Downing is one of the colleges which has been involved in the Foundation Year since it began. Our Master, Professor Graham Virgo, helped to establish it when he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education. Our Fellows are able to teach a wide range of subjects, and have been very supportive of those on the Foundation Year. Downing College is a very friendly, diverse and welcoming community, where Foundation Year students can live in a beautiful and comfortable environment near the centre of the city, with excellent facilities for socialising, music, drama, art and sports.
