Awards recognition for Bye-Fellow's children's book

Dr Paula Heister, Bye-Fellow and College Teaching Associate in Medicine, has been recognised for her new children's book at the World Illustration Awards 2023.

Her new picture book Glow finished runner-up and was “Highly Commended” in the Science and Technology category. The book was selected from a shortlist of 200 projects, drawn from over 5,000 entries from 84 countries.

Glow is a glow-in-the-dark children’s book that follows Lumy, the glow-in-the-dark rabbit, who explores the science behind nighttime glow in its different forms.

A narrative non-fiction read, Glow combines Dr Heister’s scientific background with her MA in children’s book illustration that she took at the Cambridge School of Art (Anglia Ruskin University).

She studied for her MA part-time while also working as a Junior Doctor and teaching medical students at Downing.

The illustrations were inspired by her love of printmaking with unusual colours. The pages are risograph-printed, with a glow-in-the-dark layer screen-printed over the top to create dual ‘daytime/nighttime’ images.

Dr Heister said that it had always been a dream of hers to make children’s books.

“I have always enjoyed bouncing back and forth between art and science, and Cambridge and ARU. It is a great honour to have my work highly commended among that of so many talented illustrators from around the world,” she said.

“I am very grateful both to Downing College, especially Alan Bookbinder, who supported me from day one, and to ARU for the exceptional training and opportunities I was given.”
