Downing Fellow elected President of Royal Society of Medicine section

Justin Davies, Fellow in Clinical Medicine at Downing, has been elected the new President of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) Coloproctology Section for the forthcoming year.

He was one of 29 new Section Presidents announced earlier this month, and officially took up his presidency on 11 October.

In this role, he will be responsible for leading the specialist education programme for the Coloproctology section. He will lead the section on its purpose of promoting the multidisciplinary care of patients with diseases of the large bowel, and to encourage clinical research and the education of consultants and trainees.

His presidential address, given at the RSM’s headquarters in London, covered his early years growing up in South Wales, his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Downing College, his clinical and research training in the UK and Canada, and his ongoing surgical, research, educational and wider leadership roles.

On the subject of his election, Mr Davies said: “It was a huge honour to be surrounded by friends and colleagues, but more so to have my wife and sons in the audience - they have been key to the balance of work and family life that is such an important thing for me.”

RSM is a charity and membership organisation that provides continued learning to healthcare professionals. It has a global network of 20,000 members and draws on the support of experts in over 50 specialist areas of medicine.
