Five-star review for Downing students

Congratulations to Downing students George Jackson and Gina Stock on their huge success with the Cambridge Musical Theatre Society’s Lent main show, Songs for a New World.

The show, which is the first musical from Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown, is a collection of powerful songs ‘examining life, love, and the choices we make’.

Second-year Music student George Jackson took on the role of Musical Director for the production. This was George’s first outing as Musical Director, having assisted on a number of shows since coming to Cambridge, including the 2023 CUADC/Footlights Pantomime and 2023 Lent main show Kiss Me, Kate!

George said “Music-directing Songs for a New World has been an extremely enjoyable and fulfilling process. I have loved working with such a talented and wonderful cast, crew, and band. As musical direction is potentially something I would like to pursue in the future, this experience has been invaluable in developing my skills and knowledge of the industry.”

Downing third-year Gina Stock also played a crucial role in the show as producer and choreographer, her ‘elegant choreography seamlessly [complementing] the performances, never overshadowing the vocal prowess on display. This cast, under her direction, illuminated the stage with unparalleled artistry and skill.’ (The Cambridge Tab)

George was described as ‘an extremely gifted musical director, and an even better keys player. His unwavering passion, dedication, and vision elevated the production to heights of sublime beauty, leaving the audience spellbound and profoundly moved.’

Congratulations to them both!
