The Long Club

Downing College Rugby Union Football Club holds a special place in all our hearts. We not only remember DCRUFC for the great rugby played at Long Road or the House of Pain (formally Grantchester Road), but also for the countless nights in the Fountain Inn or the Alma, the bitter rivalry with J*hns J*hns, the tours of many parts of the world or just having your arms around your mates belting out some rugby songs.

Whether you were a Cuppers’ winning captain or the second team bench warmer, I’m sure you can all agree that DCRUFC was a truly unforgettable part of our time at Downing. As we now live in the real world with the burdens of jobs, taxes and maybe even families, we look back fondly at our time at DCRUFC wishing we could put that shirt on once more and get out there with the lads.

For many years gone by the Club has arranged informal alumni gatherings usually consisting of an Old Boys match followed by an evening of entertainment at the House of Pain. As the Club has gone from strength to strength over the past few years, we thought it was fitting to formalise and strengthen those alumni relations to allow ongoing support for DCRUFC.

The Long Club is born.

Our principles

Its founding principles are:

  • To promote the sporting success of Downing College Rugby Union Football Club and encourage student engagement in rugby.
  • To support the purchase of equipment for DCRUFC; foster a team spirit and deepen alumni engagement.
  • To support the social aspect of rugby, freshers’ events, and recruitment of new members to the Club.

By continuing to support the club with your generous donation, you’ll benefit from invitations to the Annual Dinner (Michaelmas) and the Old Boys Match (Lent Term), DCRUFC match reports, annual club reports, and importantly, more stash.

All of the above is with the support of Downing College and its Development Office who have been very generous with their time to support the establishment of this club, for which we are very grateful.

The first event will be The Long Club Annual Dinner due to be held on Saturday 12 November 2022.
